Somerset Area Little League, located in Somerset, PA, was the recipient of an equipment grant in 2020 as part of the Pirates Charities and Tull Family Foundation program, which provided baseball and softball gear to 20 leagues in Pennsylvania and one program in West Virginia.
Somerset Area Little League provides leagues and teams for ages 5-16 for both baseball and softball, and serves about 400 children. Each team gets a limited amount of baseballs or softballs to use for games, so the volunteer coaches end up having to purchase balls for their teams to practice with.
The equipment grant that Somerset Area Little League received allowed them to keep registration fees down, encouraging greater participation. The donation of baseballs and softballs allowed the tee ball division to add three new teams, with eight children on each team.
